I’m keeping the beer review short this week so we can talk about the fundraiser for the employees of Ferguson Brewing that’s happening tonight along with the usual Beer League festivities… like this weeks beer – Tornado Alley from Charleville Vineyard and Brewery. Over at the Charleville website, they describe Tornado Alley as:
“American amber ale, with a rich red hue. Made with American variety hops used to produce a medium-high hop bitterness, flavor, and aroma. The hops help to balance the malty caramel character. With a medium-full body, this ale has subtle fruitly aromas and flavors sure to please any beer lovers palate!”
That’s right – fruitly aromas. Subtle ones.
Over at RateBeer, a user named EtTuCthulu gave it a 3.4 and said, “This beer pours a slightly hazy copper color with a very small off-white head, and the aroma is toasted and caramel malts. The taste is slightly umami, slightly sour, and a touch sweet, and the aftertaste is slightly nutty and more like a brown than an amber. The palate fuses a slick texture, medium-light body, and a soft carbonation.”
Alternately, donkeyrunner from BeerAdvocate brought it in at a 3.28 by saying, “Picked this (and 2 other Charleville brews) as singles at a Trader Joe’s in St. Louis. Appearance: Hazy amber, with only slight carbonation, and no lace to speak of. Could use some improvement here, already. Not a promising start. Aroma: Caramel and toffee maltiness, and a hint of sweetness. Pretty solid amber characteristics, so points for being “on style”. Taste: Rich and malty sweet, with more of those caramel and toffee notes, and a slight hint of fruitiness in there. I get a touch of hop bitterness coming in near the finish, too. Despite the low carbonation, this one’s pretty decent for the style, though not one I’d pursue again.”
Now for the Ferguson Brewing Employee Benefit stuff! First off, tonight will be CASH ONLY – no tabs, y’all! There is a Region’s Bank conveniently located in our plaza, should you forget and only bring plastic!
If you’re unable to attend our event you can donate at the link setup by the St. Louis Brewers Guild, but GoFundMe will take 5% of your generosity:
It’s no secret that we love Ferguson Brewing Company.
They have supported TWR by having their name on the “where to get Ferguson Brewing beer” chalkboard inside the brewery since Jimmy first put a tap in just for them at The Waiting Room Bar & Venue.
Their brewers have come by TWR for meet’n’greets and giveaways for Beer League at The Waiting Room, and one time when the Captaineers were sitting at the bar inside FBC, we made a twitter post and tagged them – and they gave us an on-the-spot tour that included their pilot system and itsty-bitsy bottling line.
When we heard about the fire at Ferguson Brewing last week, we wanted to help out – so we will. We’ll have 50/50 tickets for sale – with the proceeds going to the employees of Ferguson Brewing.
Food will be provided by Wayno’s – Mobile International Cuisine starting at 8PM!
