Beer League @TWR – Bell’s Hopslam Ale!

Beer League - where there are no jerseys, we usually play in jeans, and the only sporting event is 12oz curls!

Have you ever heard of these guys called Bell's Brewery? They're from Michigan and they have been around for a long, long time in the world of small batch (cough CRAFT cough) brewing. How long, you might ask? Well they started in 1985... which precludes quite a few Beer Leaguers. Crazy!

We went straight to the source at Bell's to get their take on their own beer - it's the logical first stop!

"Starting with six different hop varietals added to the brew kettle & culminating with a massive dry-hop addition of Simcoe hops, Bell's Hopslam Ale possesses the most complex hopping schedule in the Bell's repertoire.

Selected specifically because of their aromatic qualities, these Pacific Northwest varieties contribute a pungent blend of grapefruit, stone fruit and floral notes. A generous malt bill and a solid dollop of honey provide just enough body to keep the balance in check, resulting in a remarkably drinkable rendition of the Double India Pale Ale style."

On top of that - it clocks in at a whopping 10% ABV, which in itself is what we like to call, "Kind-of a big deal" around these parts. But for a beer called "Hopslam" it is only 70 IBU's - which as we all know is a damn deceptive number.

What we're going to do tonight is figure out if that IBU number seems high or low, and figure out how they cram all those ABV's into CAN's.

Beer Advocate

Pours a dark golden color, very hazy with a medium white head on top. Can smell a lot of hops along with some citrus. Very hoppy in taste with a sweet after taste, very well balanced.

Even more reviews!

Gorgeous honey peach pour, nice cloud, clingy lacing. Aromatic peach, honey, mango, tangerine, pine - danky, fruity, malty. Taste is silky smooth, juicy, bready, sweet, grassy - everything an IPA should be; flavours are bold but perfectly balanced - shocking that this is 10%. On my shortlist of the best beers I’ve ever had.

Beer League - It's What's for Dinner

Tonight we'll see you for a (chilly!) Hopslam out on the patio. Oh, you don't want to hang out outside because it FINALLY feels a little like winter in St. Louis? I don't blame you - we don't either. Just wanted to make it an option.

We'll see you tonight for a couple Hopslam IPA's in a can - so make sure you bring a coozie if you don't like your beer in a glass!

We send out the beer every week in an email as well - some people like that more than having to go through the website or checking our facebook. So join up!
